Devonshire Childcare - Willoughby Council

The renovation of the early learning centre for Willoughby City Council reinterprets the existing facility through a design framework centred on affordability, durability, environmental responsibility, safety and inclusivity. The project seeks to create an activated learning environment where spatial clarity, natural materials and playful elements support children’s daily activities and social interaction.
A restrained material palette of light natural timber establishes a warm yet neutral interior atmosphere. The use of timber joinery and soft-toned finishes creates a calm spatial backdrop that allows children’s drawings, toys and learning materials to become the primary visual focus. This neutral environment enhances visual clarity while encouraging creativity and ownership of the space by its young users.
Each classroom is defined through a subtle cosmic theme, including Planet, Galaxy, Moon and Star. Geometric forms and graphic motifs associated with these themes are integrated into walls, ceilings and joinery elements, creating spatial identities that encourage curiosity and exploration. Rather than relying on overt decoration, the design uses minimal graphic language and spatial cues to foster a sense of interaction between the children and their environment.

Custom-designed mattress platforms introduce a multi-functional architectural element that integrates rest areas, play surfaces and concealed storage. The raised platform system maximises spatial efficiency while maintaining a clean and organised environment. Storage is embedded within the platform structure, allowing teaching spaces to remain flexible and uncluttered.
Playfulness is further introduced through the integration of net trampoline structures, which operate as suspended play and reading surfaces. These elements provide opportunities for movement, relaxation and informal learning, adding spatial variation and encouraging physical engagement within the classroom environment.
